What to do when you are pulled over

Getting pulled over can be nerve racking, but there are ways to manage the interaction with law enforcement to make the process go better.

First is and foremost, when you are pulled over and the officer asks "Do you know why I pulled you over" the answer to that is no. You have no idea why they pulled you over, you can't read that officer's mind. They might have pulled you over due to a speed reading, your license plate might be covered with snow. The only person that knows is that officer, so an honest answer to that question is "No officer, I don't know why."

After that first interaction you will likely be asked for your license and insurance information. Officers are allowed to ask for that at any traffic stop. If you have them with you, great, provide them to the officer.

You might get a ticket or a warning depending on the situation. Speaking calmly with the officer, no matter how unfair it feels, can only help you.

If you get a ticket DO NOT JUST PAY IT. Paying a ticket is a guilty plea and it may go on your driving record. Everyone should call an attorney about a traffic ticket so that it can be contested at court.

Contesting a traffic ticket doesn't have to take a lot of time. Often times an attorney can get a deal with the prosecutor to reduce the fine or even keep the ticket off your record. But if you pay the ticket you don't have that option.

Contest your traffic tickets, have an attorney in your corner to speak with the prosecutor about why you should get a deal. I have years of experience prosecuting traffic tickets and I know what the prosecutors are looking for.

With an experienced attorney on your side your traffic ticket doesn't always have to end in a conviction, fine and trouble for your license and/or insurance.

If you have received a traffic ticket call or text me at 320-460-1400 to speak to me about affordable representation that could save you time, money and license or insurance issues.
